Questions retirees ask us
Can I apply from my home country?
Yes. The O-A long-stay visa is applied for at a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country and gives you one year on arrival. It needs 800,000 Thai Baht or a qualifying income, health insurance, a police clearance and a medical certificate. We check every document before you file, so you only make the embassy trip once.
Can my younger spouse come with me?
Yes. Only the main applicant has to be 50 or older. Your husband or wife can join you on a dependant visa linked to yours, even if they are younger. We prepare both files together.
Is my pension taxed in Thailand?
It can be. If you spend 180 days or more in Thailand in a year you are a Thai tax resident, and foreign income you bring into Thailand may be taxable. Whether your pension is taxed depends on the type of pension and on the tax treaty between Thailand and your home country. We are not tax advisers, so please confirm your own position with a qualified tax adviser before you move.
How much do your services cost?
You receive one fixed fee, in writing, before any work begins. Each case is quoted after a free call, because the work depends on your visa route and documents. Government fees, such as the 1,900 Thai Baht extension fee, are shown separately.
Can I buy property in Thailand?
You can own a condominium unit in your own name, as long as the building’s foreign quota (49% of the total unit area) is not used up and the purchase money is transferred from abroad. Foreigners generally cannot own land, so houses are usually rented or held on a registered lease. We help with rental and condo searches; for a purchase, have a lawyer check the contract.
